Klaverjassen is a popular Dutch card game for two to four players. It is played with a standard deck of 32 cards. The card values are Ace (high or low), King, Queen, Jack, 10, 9, 8, 7. The Goal of Klaverjassen is to score the most Points by taking Tricks and making melds.
1. Deal: The dealer deals out all 32 cards in batches of 8. The cards are dealt cLockwise, starting with the player to the left of the dealer.
2. Bidding: Starting with the player to the left of the dealer, each player must bid on the number of Tricks they think they can take. The Minimum bid is two Tricks and the maximum bid is seven Tricks. The player who bids the most Tricks becomes the declarer and the other players become the Defenders.
3. Trump Suit: The declarer then chooses a trump suit. The trump suit is the suit that will trump all other suits and is the Only suit that can be used to take a trick when the player does not have the lead suit.
4. Melds: After the trump suit is chosen, each player can make melds. Melds are combinations of cards that score Points. The most common melds are the Royal Marriage (King and Queen of the same suit), the Sequence (three or four cards of the same suit in consecutive order), and the Flush (four cards of the same suit).
5. Play: The player to the left of the declarer leads the first trick. Each player must Follow suit if possible and must play a higher card than the one previously played if possible. If a player does not have the lead suit, they can play any card, including a trump. The highest card of the lead suit or the highest trump wins the trick. The winner of the trick leads the next trick.
6. ScoRing: After all the Tricks have been played, the Points are tallied. The declarer scores Points for each trick taken and for any melds made. The Defenders score Points for any Tricks taken and melds made. The team with the highest score wins the game.
