1. Set Up the Chessboard: Place the board between the two players so that the near corner Square to the right of each player is a white Square. Place the rooks on the outer corners, then the Knights next to them, Followed by the bishops, and finally the queen on her own matching color, and the king on the remaining Square.
2. Determine who goes first: The player with the white pieces always moves first.
3. Learn the basic moves of the pieces: Each piece moves DIFFerently. The pawns can OnlyMove Forward one Square at a time, except for their very first move wHere they can move two Squares. The rooks can move any number of Squares Horizontally or vertically. The Knights move in an “L” shape, two Squares in one direction and then one more Turn. The bishops can move any number of Squares diagonally. The queen can move any number of Squares in any direction. The king can move one Square in any direction.
4. Capture pieces: When a piece is in a position to capture an opponent’s piece, it is known as a “check”. The player whose piece is being threaTened must move the piece out of the way or capture the threaTening piece. If a king is threaTened with capture, it is known as “checkmate” and the game is over.
5. Win the game: The game is won when one player checkmates the other player’s king.
While Junior Chess was a perfect way to teach chess to younger generations, Chess Challenges wraps up the whole experience as a series of puzzles, making it more casual but still quite challenging.
