1. Set Up the board: Place the pieces on their reSpective starting positions. White's pieces are placed on the first and second ranks, while Red's pieces are placed on the seventh and eighth ranks.
2. White moves first: White moves first, and can move any piece to any legal space on the board.
3. Taking pieces: If a player's piece moves to a space occUpied by an opponent's piece, the opponent's piece is taken and removed from the board.
4. Check and checkmate: If a player's king is put in a position wHere it can be taken by an opponent's piece, it is said to be in "check." If a player's king is in check and cannot move out of check, it is said to be in "checkmate," and the game is over.
5. Pawn promotion: If a pawn reaches the opponent's back rank, it can be promoted to a queen, rook, bishop, or knight.
6. Draws: The game can end in a draw if both players agree to it, or if neither player can checkmate the other.
